The Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) warns Connecticut residents that fraudulent door-to-door magazine companies may be resurfacing this summer, particularly in the New London area.
Many members of the magazine sales crews are often victims of the scam themselves through pyramid schemes, the DCP said.
The DCP has also disclosed signs of a scam for the consumer:
- Magazine sales people only accept cash or check, making it difficult to trace financial transactions.
- Door-to-door sales people use an emotionally-stirring story and/or pressure tactics.
- The company has an unfamiliar name. These companies often change their names or use addresses in other states.
- If consumers call to inquire about a purchased magazine subscription, the sales team has probably already cashed any checks they received and moved on to another city or state.
If a door-to-door pitch seems suspicious, the DCP reminds consumers they can report it by phone at 860-713-6100 or dcp.frauds@ct.gov, or through the local police department.
