Connecticut Natural Gas, a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc., recently installed a new main in the town of Hebron that will provide energy for town buildings and schools.

The new 8-mile natural gas main follows East St. from an existing CNG gate station near the Andover town line. It extends south along Gilead and Church streets, with one spur reaching back north along Route 85, and another following Main Street into the Hebron town center.

It will serve the Regional Hebron, Andover and Marlborough (RHAM) High School and RHAM Middle School, as well as Hebron Elementary School, Gilead Hill School, Hebron Town Offices and Hebron Fire Department, as well as several commercial customers.

“This project has major benefits not only for the town of Hebron, but also the RHAM school district, our business community and our taxpayers,” Hebron Town Manager Andrew J. Tierney said in a statement. “In addition to the favorable cost compared with oil, natural gas prices are stable and predictable, reducing the likelihood of budgetary surprises. Having clean-burning natural gas available in town also supports economic development, and the new gas infrastructure becomes part of Hebron’s Grand List.”

The town and regional facilities are converting their heating systems to use natural gas, with significant projected annual savings compared with other heating fuels. The RHAM schools are expected to save more than $101,000 a year, based on current fuel prices and previous usage. The Hebron schools and town buildings are projected to save nearly $34,000 a year.

The total project cost was approximately $5.6 million. The town and school district contributed a one-time payment of $758,000 to make the project viable. Work began this spring, after CNG received local approval.
