Crews began demolition work on a century-old historic Connecticut church this week, despite a recent attempt to save it.

The former Trinity Episcopal Church on Prospect Street is more than 100 years old, but the Waterbury building’s owners decided on demolition due to expensive structural problems with the building. Waterbury historian Raechel Guest told WVIT-TV that she hoped there might be a way to save the building.

“It’s an important part of our history and it’s an important asset for Waterbury that now is lost and being replaced with a parking lot,” she said, adding that she hopes residents can direct their energies toward saving other historic buildings in the area that are at risk of demolition.
