A struggling shopping mall that was touted as the site for a third Connecticut casino is set to hit the auction block next month.
The online auction for the 680,000-square-foot Enfield Square Mall will be conducted Dec. 10-12 with bids starting at $3.8 million, the Hartford Courant reported. The mall was completed in 1971 and acquired by J.P. Morgan Chase Commercial Mortgage Securities Corp. at a 2016 foreclosure.
The mall’s occupancy has fallen to 57 percent following the loss of anchors Macy’s and J.C. Penney.
Owners pitched the property this year as a location for a satellite casino designed to siphon Connecticut business from the new MGM Springfield casino. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun ultimately selected a site in East Windsor, but the project has been delayed as the native American tribes seek approval from the federal Department of the Interior.
Enfield officials last year submitted a proposal to host Amazon’s second headquarters at the mall property, citing its location along the “Knowledge Corridor” from Hartford to Springfield.
