Wallingford officials have denied a proposal by the new owners of the former Bristol-Myers Squibb campus to redevelop it as a pair of warehouses totaling 1.1 million square feet.

The town’s planning and zoning commission voted 4-1 Monday night to deny a special permit for Hudson, Massachusetts-based Calare Properties, the Record-Journal of Meriden reported. Calare purchased the 915,000-square-foot office and R&D campus on 180 acres in February for $5 million.

Drugmaker Bristol-Myers Squibb said in 2015 that it would close the facility, which had employed approximately 800 employees, part of a reorganization to consolidate its research operations in New Jersey, the San Francisco Bay area and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Calare Properties, which specializes in industrial acquisitions and development, had proposed 970 parking spaces, 243 trailer stalls and 250 loading docks to serve the new warehouses, The Record Journal reported.,

Residents objected to the anticipated traffic generated by the facility, with a study estimating more than 1,800 vehicle trips to and from the property daily.
