New Yorkers are very interested in moving to Connecticut; in fact, more than one in 10 New York City-area residents are hunting for apartments in the state’s three major metro areas, according to new data from Apartment List.

The site measured searches of Apartment List users between Jan. 1, 2018 and May 1, 2019. For users who searched in multiple locations, the company’s researchers considered the initial search location to be the primary one. Each user’s current place of residence was defined by the IP address from which the user is searching.

Among all users living in and around New Haven in the study period, 56.3 percent were searching for apartments in locations that would keep them in New Haven, and 43.7 percent of apartment hunters currently living in New Haven were searching outside of the area. At the same time, 68.7 percent of those looking for a place to rent in New Haven were searching from outside the metro, and 31.3 percent of searches came from New Haven residents that are trying to stay in the area.

New Haven drew the most interest from people looking to relocate from New York (30.3 percent), Fairfield County (17.6 percent) and Worcester, Massachusetts (9.8 percent). However, the interest from New Yorkers only represented 2.1 of New York-area residents looking to leave. Of the New Haven residents looking to move out, 18.6 percent were looking to move to Hartford, 16.5 percent were looking to move to Fairfield County, 10.5 percent to Boston and 9.2 percent to New York City.

Data covering Fairfield County show a different picture of renter activity. Among all users living in Fairfield County in the study period, 39.9 percent were searching for apartments in locations that would keep them in Fairfield County, and 60.1 percent of apartment hunters currently living in Fairfield County were searching outside of the area.

However, among people looking for an apartment in the Fairfield County area, 64.4 percent of those looking for a place to live were searching from outside the metro and 35.6 percent were Fairfield County residents. Among those looking to move from outside the area, 53 percent lived in or near New York City – 3.7 percent of New Yorkers looking to leave – 7.2 percent lived in Worcester and 5.8 percent lived in Boston.

In Greater Hartford, 57.6 percent were searching for apartments in locations that would keep them in the area, and 42.4 percent of apartment hunters currently living in Hartford were searching outside of their metro. At the same time, 60 percent of those looking for a place to live in Hartford were searching from outside the metro, and 40 percent of searches came from Hartford residents that were trying to stay in their metro.

Hartford drew the most interest from people looking to relocate from New York (32.7 percent, or 4.5 percent of New Yorkers looking to leave), Worcester (15.4 percent) and Fairfield County (13 percent). Of the Hartford residents looking to move out, 15.5 percent were bound for Boston, 12.2 percent were looking to move to New Haven and 5.9 percent were interested in New York City.
