The new owner of a 15-story ex-state office building in Hartford is asking the city for a tax abatement as it plans a $7.5 million renovation.

The tower at 25 Sigourney St. includes 627,401 square feet of office space has been vacant for several years after the state pulled workers out due to poor indoor air quality and mold issues.

The new owner, Spartan Tower LLC, wants to renovate the building and either rehabilitate or demolish the adjoining 4-story parking garage to bring it back to a usable state.

The building was built in the early 1980s.

The tax abatement deal proposed by Mayor Luke Bronin would see the property taxes fixed at their current level – $175,000 per year for the next four years, $200,000 for the three following years and $225,000 for the three years after that, for a total of $1.97 million over 10 years.

The council voted Monday to refer the matter to one of its subcommittees.
