The mayor of New Haven has lost her bid for reelection while incumbent mayors in Bridgeport and Hartford are declaring victory.
Former New Haven Alder Justin Elicker on Tuesday soundly defeated Mayor Toni Harp, who was running as a third party candidate after losing the Democratic primary.
Harp has presided over a boom in the construction of market-rate apartments in and around the city’s downtown, a boom which has drawn the ire of some in the community worried about displacement of existing residents.
In his campaign, Elicker cited statistics saying 41 percent of city residents spent more than 30 percent of their gross income on housing. In response, he pledged to support inclusionary zoning policies for market-rate multifamily projects, find ways to support the construction of accessory dwelling units and change zoning in certain areas to unlock the development potential of empty lots. In addition, Elicker said he would increase pressure on landlords to comply with building codes and increase use of the city’s $100-per-day blight fines to tackle vacant or run-down properties in the city.
In Bridgeport the Connecticut Post reported Mayor Joe Ganim had won reelection. In the Democratic primary, Ganim narrowly defeated state Sen. Marilyn Moore by 270 votes, and Moore and several other candidates were running against Ganim as write-in candidates.
In the capital city the Hartford Courant reported Mayor Luke Bronin, a Democrat, won a six-way race to secure reelection.
