Homebuilding and multifamily construction is headed for another banner year in Connecticut, with the number of housing units permitted through Nov. 30 up 1,222 over the same time last year.

According to statistics released by the state Department of Economic and Community Development, Connecticut municipalities have permitted 4,662 housing units of all types through the end of November, compared to 3,440 through the end of November 2018, the largest such number since November 2016. The state permitted 372 units in December 2018.

While nearly every month of this year had seen modest year-over-year increases in the DECD figures, the permitting of 1,073 units in October of this year and 444 in November helped the 2019 tally surge ahead.

The October surge was driven by 930 multifamily units and the November figure by 290 multifamily units permitted. Stamford drove the October surge with 713 units of all types permitted, followed by Fairfield (89) and Shelton (61); New Haven made up the largest share of the November permits with 233 units of all types permitted. In both months, municipalities OK’d roughly the same number of single-family homes: 133 in October and 136 in November.
