While distribution centers appear to be sprouting up like mushrooms after the rain in Greater Hartford, one facility will instead be closing.
FedEx told the Connecticut Department of Labor last week that it plans to close its Windsor SmartPost facility. The announcement was made in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter on Feb. 6.
“In light of current market dynamics and the growth of e-commerce, FedEx Ground is transforming its operations in many ways, including the integration of package volume in certain areas,” the letter stated.
The facility at 759 Rainbow Road a short distance from Bradley International Airport employs 133 people. FedEx plans to close the facility on April 18.
Central Connecticut offers industrial rents roughly half those of Greater Boston and New York, with triple-net rents of approximately $6 per square foot on high-bay warehouse space. Developers continue to scout raw land or redevelopment of former big-box retail and manufacturing sites, as The Commercial Record reported earlier this year.
The 126,839-square-foot facility was built in 2006 and is assessed at $5.05 million, according to local property records. The property is owned by an LLC controlled by Bloomfield-based Griffin Industrial Realty Inc.
