Homelessness Funding OK’d

Gov. M. Jodi Rell recently announced that $3.5 million for supportive housing services to help Connecticut residents move from homelessness to independent living is expected to be approved when the state Bond Commission meets March 31.

Rell, who chairs the commission, said approval will help fund development of 300 additional units through the Supportive Housing Pilots Initiative, an innovative private-public partnership aimed at breaking the cycle of chronic homelessness.

“Supportive housing has proven to be a truly effective way to prevent and reduce homelessness, especially for people struggling with serious mental health problems,” Rell said. “Supportive housing combines affordable rental housing with individualized health, support and employment services. These services help address the root causes of homelessness and get people back on the road to recovery and work.”

Connecticut’s initiative has been cited as one of the top 50 government innovations for 2006 by the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, in cooperation with the Council for Excellence in Government.

The Bond Commission is expected to approve the latest infusion of $3.5 million of a total state bond investment of $23 million in the development of 300 units of affordable housing with supportive services. Ultimately, the Supportive Housing Pilots Initiative is expected to provide up to 650 units of affordable housing and support services. Those units are in addition to 500 new units for which Rell proposed, and the Legislature approved, funding last year. Those units are part of a new supportive housing initiative that builds upon the success of the Pilots initiative.

“Supportive housing has been shown to be a cost-effective solution to chronic homelessness,” the governor’s 2006-07 budget recommendation said. “This initiative will create stability for vulnerable populations, decrease their use of acute and expensive health and mental health services and set them on the road to a productive life.”
Sunshine Appoints Managers

The Stamford-based Sunshine Group, the exclusive sales and marketing agent for The Classic Condominiums, has appointed Keith Clarke and Nancy Zola as sales managers for downtown Stamford’s newest luxury condominium building.

Clarke’s extensive real estate experience includes positions with William Pitt Sotheby’s International in Stamford, 59 Courtland Assoc. in Greenwich and Windermere Real Estate in Seattle.

Before joining The Sunshine Group, Zola was affiliated with Weichert Realtors. She also has worked with several Fortune 500 corporations, including IBM and AT&T Wireless.

Clarke and Zola will be on site at The Classic Condominiums seven days a week. Both managers, who live in Stamford, are excited about the building and its nearby amenities.

“This is an absolutely great and unique property,” Clarke said. “Stamford has a mix of newer construction low-rises and single-family houses, but for high-rise luxury living, this is it.”
