Town Reimbursed for Lot

The federal government has reimbursed the town of Fairfield for a $3.75 million commuter parking lot that is part of the landmark development project known as Fairfield Metro Center.

Blackrock Realty, a joint venture between Westport-based Wittek Development and New York- and New Jersey- based Rugby Realty Co., is the developer of the project, which is located just off Interstate 95 at Exit 24.

Fairfield First Selectman Ken Flatto said the town has officially acquired title to an 8.8-acre parcel that will contain 1,500 spaces for commuter parking adjacent to a new Metro North railroad station that is part of the $350 million, 35-acre Fairfield Metro Center development project. The $3.75 million commuter lot purchase, originally paid for by the town of Fairfield, has been entirely reimbursed by the federal government along with an additional $250,000 for preliminary site cleanup.

“This project now is becoming a reality,” Flatto said. “It will be a huge economic benefit to the town of Fairfield as well as the entire region. I am committed to doing everything possible to move this project toward completion as rapidly as possible. I also want to thank Sen. Christopher Dodd for his strong support of this project and tireless efforts to help secure the federal dollars needed to make this project a success.”

“The significance of this purchase cannot be underestimated,” said U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays. “It has taken the town and the developer many years to get to this point. We now will see an increasing surge of action as the long, careful planning finally pays off. I am gratified that federal dollars are spurring the project into high gear.”

Purchase of the land by the town was a key step in the project, which will include a new Metro North station, a signature Hilton Hotel, 800,000 square feet of world-class office space, more than 60,000 square feet of retail amenities, a teleconference center, fitness center and spa. There also will be covered parking for those who work in and visit the complex.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is funding the approximately $40 million train station, platforms, new vehicular bridge over the Metro North tracks, pedestrian bridge overpass and the “kiss and ride” drop-off area. About 80 percent of that is money coming from the federal government.
