Despite continuing economic hardships nationwide, the country’s credit unions are celebrating their history and planning for the future, hoping to capitalize on high levels of trust among consumers.
The mood at Revolution, America’s credit union conference and expo held this week in Boston, is optimistic as the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) marks its 75th anniversary this year. The solid history of credit unions may bode well as the industry looks ahead. The nation’s first credit union, St. Mary’s Bank Credit Union, opened 100 years ago in Manchester, N.H., and is still in operation today.
"We have the optimism and trust of the American people," Dan Mica, president and CEO of CUNA, said in his opening remarks. "When everyone has given up on the American financial institutions, ranking number one in trust is something to be proud of."
Revolution began yesterday with a talk on the history of credit unions. The conference continues tomorrow.
