Washington Trust Appoints Former Citizens R.I. Head As New Pres., COO

Joseph J. MarcAurele Westerly, R.I-based Washington Trust Bancorp, operator of three Washington Trust Co. branches in the village of Mystic, has appointed , former president of Citizens Bank, Rhode Island, as its new president and COO, effective Sept. 21.

MarcAurele was also elected to the board of directors of the corporation and the bank. He served as Citizens’ Rhode Island president since 2001.

According to a statement, the appointment is part of the corporation’s succession plan. MarcAurele succeeds John F. Treanor, who will retire in October. At that time, MarcAurele will also assume the position of president and chief operating officer of the corporation. John C. Warren, Washington Trust chairman and CEO since 1996, has previously announced his upcoming retirement in April 2010.
