Denizens of Hartford and New Haven have some of the best credit scores in America, according to a recent analysis from the consumer finance site NerdWallet.
Residents of the Greater Hartford and New Haven areas averaged a VantageScore of 683, putting that metropolitan area at No. 20 on the list of cities with the best credit. According to NerdWallet, Hartford and New Haven residents also averaged 3.59 open credit cards.
Nearby, residents of the Greater Boston and Manchester, N.H. areas placed at No. 8 on the list, averaging a VantageScore of 694 and 3.6 open credit cards. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area was ranked by NerdWallet as the metropolitan area with the best credit score, averaging 702.
The VantageScore is a credit rating product created by the three major credit reporting bureaus and an attempt to compete with the FICO score. In analyzing 143 of the largest U.S. metropolitan areas, NerdWallet looked at credit score and open credit card data from Experian.
According to NerdWallet, residents of the top 20 places with the best credit scores averaged 3.33 open credit cards, while those in the 20 areas with the worst credit scores averaged just 2.68 open credit cards.
According to NerdWallet’s analysis, the metropolitan areas with the best credit scores were concentrated largely in the Midwest, while the worst credit scores were concentrated mainly in the South and Texas.
