Insurance Commissioner Katharine L. Wade is warning consumers to watch out for a phone scam in which a caller poses as an insurance company representative.

The caller falsely informs people that their policy is being canceled after not receiving payment and requests credit card information over the phone to reinstate the policy.

There has so far been one reported case in Connecticut.

“We urge consumers to be vigilant at all times but especially around the holidays. Never give out your credit card information to an unsolicited caller,” Wade said in a statement. “If you have an agent or agency you deal with directly, contact them to verify the status of your policy or payment or call your insurance company’s customer service number.”
