Bridgeport officials say a fire at a condominium building has left at least 50 people homeless. Authorities say one resident and a firefighter were taken to a hospital.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the four-story, 36-unit building on Charles Street shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday. One resident was rescued from the third floor and is being treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation. A firefighter also is being treated for minor injuries.

Authorities say the fire began in the basement garage area and spread to the first floor. Smoke was reported throughout the building, which has extensive damage. Residents said they heard booms.

The cause is under investigation.
