Connecticut Awards $4.7M To Help Protect Open Space

Connecticut is awarding $4.7 million to help 17 communities purchase a total of 1,170 acres of open space.

The funds announced Monday also include $50,000 to help renovate an urban garden in New Haven and develop a new garden in Hartford.

Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says Connecticut’s tradition of preserving open space dates back to the early 1900s. He says the latest grant funding “protects important natural resources” while ensuring the state “maintains its natural beauty.”

Connecticut has a goal of protecting 673,210 acres, or preserving 21 percent of the state’s land, by 2023. Currently, more than 500,000 acres have been designated as state or local open space lands, which is close to 75 percent of the state’s goal.
