A Hamden resident was sentenced last week in New Haven to six months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for tax evasion.  

As a salesman for Good Copy Printing Center Inc., Ira Malkin worked on commission based on sales made to customers. The company then paid many of Malkin’s expenses between 2003 and 2012, and reduced Malkin’s commissions by the amount of personal expenses the company paid. The company then reported on his W-2 forms that Malkin made much less than he actually earned.  

Malkin also handled printing jobs for Comcast, where Good Copy Printing Center paid for postage and other expenses related to the job. These expenses were also subtracted from Malkin’s earnings between 2009 and 2012, where Malkin underreported his income on his W-2 forms yet again.  

Overall, Malkin underreported more than $1.5 million in income, and failed to pay $484,581 in federal income taxes. Though Malkin has paid off all of his back taxes, he still owes the IRS more than $700,000 interest and penalties.  

Malkin, who is released on a $50,000 bond, will report to prison on Oct. 11.
