United Rentals Inc. on Wednesday reported third-quarter earnings of $333 million.

On a per-share basis, the Stamford-based company said it had profit of $4.01. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $4.74 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $4.54 per share.

The equipment rental company posted revenue of $2.12 billion in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.02 billion.

United Rentals expects full-year revenue in the range of $7.77 billion to $7.87 billion.

United Rentals shares have declined 19 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $139.04, a decline of 3 percent in the last 12 months.
