A new 19,000-square-foot school expansion upon the existing Riverside Magnet School in has been completed in East Hartford.
The new building expands the former early-childhood facility to accommodate pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students.
Formerly called the Goodwin College Early Childhood Magnet School, the Reggio Emilia-inspired facility opened five years ago. The original and the new expansion were both designed by the architecture, art and advisory firm Svigals + Partners, based in New Haven.
The Riverside Magnet School has expanded significantly in recent years and planned for additional space to house growing demand from area families. The new facility, which opened in August, offers specialized instructional spaces for programs including instrumental music as well as additional classrooms, a project center, a new kitchen and a dividable multi-purpose room.
The building expansion helps support new academic and enrichment programs including an orchestral music program as well as a new project center for promoting literacy and technology skills, according to the school.
