Building on nearly $1 billion worth of investments made during former Gov. Dannel Malloy’s administration, a new state plan for the life sciences sector hopes to spur the creation of 6,000 new jobs over the next decade.

A group including UConn, Yale, the state Department of Economic and Community Development, venture capital firms and companies like Pfizer and Boehringer Ingelheim have produced a report laying out a path to those future jobs, the Hartford Business Journal reported. The jobs would represent a roughly 25 percent increase over the current size of the sector, the paper reports.

Venture capital funding and lab space are seen as significant stumbling blocks to expanding the industry in Connecticut.

Some business leaders have in recent months suggested an “eds and meds” economic model centered in New Haven might be a viable path forward to grow the state’s economy.
