New Haven city officials released a new plan for the city’s waterfront Tuesday which envisions over 500,000 square feet of commercial development and 4,600 new housing units.
The Long Wharf Responsible Growth Plan covers a 325-acre area home to a hodgepodge of industry, big box retailers including IKEA and office uses. The New Haven Independent first reported on the plan’s release.
The plan envisions retaining the three largest properties between Interstate 95 and the city’s Metro North rail yard – Jordan’s Furniture, IKEA and the Assa Abloy facility – and concentrating new development on the parking lots and industrial lots that surround the 545 Long Wharf Drive office tower.
The plan also envisions large, waterfront park built to help shield the area from sea level rise.
