“Tiny houses” – homes between 400 and 800 square feet – are being pushed by some housing activists as a solution to the state’s shortage of affordable housing units.
Doug Werner, of Tiny House Co., is seeking a parcel of land in Bridgeport to pilot his idea that tiny houses are cheaper and faster to build than traditional housing, the Connecticut Post reports. A smaller tiny house can cost $50,000 and $65,000 to build, the paper reports. Zoning makes it difficult to build tiny homes in much of the state.
The median single-family home cost $258,000 in Connecticut and $451,750 in Fairfield County in 2018 according to data from The Warren Group, publisher of The Commercial Record. The statewide median condominium sale price was $165,000 in 2018, while the median condo sale price in Fairfield County was $257,750.
