Winsted-based Northwest Community Bank reported that someone attempted to pass counterfeit bank checks for payment, the Connecticut Department of Banking said in a statement.

The check was for $2,330; the check number was 138599; the account number was 55000060570 and the check was dated April 23, 2019.

Counterfeit check scams are on the rise, according to the Federal Trade Commission, and some fake checks look so real that bank tellers are reporting being fooled. The scammers typically use high quality printers and scanners to make the checks look real, and some of the checks contain authentic-looking watermarks.

These counterfeit checks are printed with the names and addresses of legitimate financial institutions. Even though the bank and account and routing numbers listed on a counterfeit check may be real, the check can still be fake.

The FTC recommends not relying on money from any type of check unless you know and trust the person you’re dealing with or until the bank confirms that the check has cleared. Forgeries can take weeks to be discovered and untangled and until the bank confirms that the funds from the check have been deposited into a person’s account, that person is responsible for any funds they withdraw against that check.
