New Haven’s biotech boomlet isn’t confined to the city.

Branford-based Tangen BioSciences signed a multi-year lease for 16,200 square feet in a commercial building at 20 Commercial St. in Branford, according to Kristin Geenty of The Geenty Group, which represented the company in the transaction. The landlord, 20 Commercial Assoc. LLC, was represented by Fred Petrella of Connecticut Realty Group.

Tangen approached Geenty during the first quarter of this year trying to quickly locating a larger bioscience facility in advance of the company bringing a new diagnostic product to market. The system, TangenDx, quickly and cheaply tests for infectious diseases like Anthrax at the molecular level, without the need for a lab. As such, the company required a space that would accommodate laboratory, a clean room, as well as engineering, assembly and additional offices.

After developing a slate of possibilities in Branford and New Haven, no facility with existing lab space suitable for biotech was found to fit the bill, so, it was determined that leasing raw space was the best option, Geenty said in a statement. Tangen worked with the landlord to design, build and equip the new facility.

The company held a grand opening on Aug. 29, completing a search, retrofit and move in less than nine months.
