The builder of a high-speed freight ferry aimed at supplying perishable local seafood and produce to New York City wants to expand his business to passengers.
Bob Kunkel’s hybrid-powered ship Harbor Harvest will go into service this month, cutting the usual nine- to 12-hour freight trip to downtown Manhattan dramatically. According to the Norwalk Hour, he now wants to create what he calls a “third highway” to the city along Long Island Sound.
The ferry trips would run from New Haven to Stamford, and from Stamford direct to New York City. The trip would take about 15 to 20 minutes longer than a Metro North train trip, he told the Norwalk Harbor Management Commission, the paper reports.
