Connecticut has permitted 7 percent more housing units through the end of August than it had by the same time last year, according to data recently released by the state Department of Economic and Community Development. That’s on top of the 14 percent year-over-year growth seen between the same period in 2018 as compared to the same period in 2017.

This year’s 181-unit increase is attributable to an increase in multifamily construction, with 75 more units permitted so far this year compared to last year, with another 92-unit increase split evenly between single-family and duplex products.

So far this year, Connecticut towns and cities have permitted 2,793 housing units in total. Of those, 1,323 are single-family homes, 1,314 are in buildings with five or more units, 104 are in duplexes and 52 are in buildings with three to four units.

The cities and towns leading the charge are:

  • Stamford, with a 275-unit jump in its year-to-date total over August 2018
  • Norwalk, with a 106-unit jump in the same period
  • South Windsor with a 72-unit jump
  • Greenwich, with a 17-unit hike in its year-to-date total over August 2018

New Haven’s slowdown in construction continues, with only 277 units permitted this year compared to 430 permitted by the end of August last year.
