A 40-unit, 80 percent affordable housing project planned for a large parcel in a residential Fairfield neighborhood has been shot down by local wetlands regulators.

The town’s Conservation Commission voted 4-3 to deny the Fairfield Housing Authority an inland wetlands permit it needed to break ground, according to the Connecticut Post. Neighbors had criticized the proposal for its density and other grounds.

The 2.48-acre lot was bought by the authority last year for $2.1 million. The Housing Authority promised to appeal as part of a fight against what it called unaffordably high home prices in the town.
