Hartford’s Homewood Suites hotel has become one of the first permanent casualties of the coronavirus outbreak.
After occupancy rates plummeted following business’ suspension of non-essential travel in recent weeks and amid growing uncertainty over how long the epidemic will last, the hotel’s owner decided it was not worth staying open. The Hartford Courant reports rates had fallen as low as 14 percent.
The city’s lack of weekend events made him question the business’ ability to recover, the paper reported.
Unemployment claims around the country are skyrocketing as the virus and government restrictions and guidelines on travel and large gatherings force retail and hospitality business to shut down temporarily and furlough or lay off workers.
