A plan to use driverless shuttles to carry staff, patients and visitors from one part of Yale New Haven Hospital’s facilities in New Haven to another may not be going anywhere.
The New Haven Independent reports the idea is falling victim to skepticism from city leaders. Safety was cited as the chief concern as the 16-foot vehicles traverse busy roads between Yale New Haven’s downtown and St. Raphael campuses.
Several studies also show that current driverless vehicle technology has a harder time detecting people of color walking in the vehicle’s path. The issue may be driven by deep-seated problems in the software used to train autonomous vehicles.
