Waterbury-based Webster Bank has named a new head of retail banking and consumer lending, a month after ending the tenure of its head of community banking.

Jonathan Roberts is Webster Bank’s new head of retail banking and consumer lending. He will oversee retail operations and the banking center network, as well as leading core consumer products and services, including small business banking, Webster said in a statement.

Roberts joined Webster in 2017 and most recently was executive vice president of consumer deposits and retail network management. He will report directly to John R. Ciulla, Webster’s chairman, president and CEO.

“Jonathan has been the driving force behind our consumer deposits growth strategy, and this new emphasis on retail banking and consumer lending will enable us to be even more responsive to the evolving, dynamic needs of our customers and the communities we serve, while continuing to expand our commercial banking activities and aggressively grow HSA Bank,” Ciulla said in a statement.

Webster Bank previously had a head of community banking, Nitin Mhatre, but his tenure ended in early October. Bank analysts at the time said the move pointed to Webster’s response to changes in consumer behaviors.

In his time at Webster Bank, Roberts has led the growth in consumer deposits and oversaw the bank’s award-winning call center.

Prior to joining Webster, Roberts had several executive leadership positions within the banking and financial services industry. His most recent position was at First Bank in St. Louis, where he served as executive vice president of retail and business banking. Prior to that, he was executive vice president and Mid-Atlantic president at Santander Bank in Philadelphia, and executive vice president and head of community banking at F.N.B. Corporation in Pittsburgh.
