East Hartford-based America’s First Network Credit Union has completed its third merger in the past 12 months after acquiring Groton Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union last week.

GME FCU had about $7 million in assets and a field of membership including employees of the town of Groton, the town of Montville, the Visiting Nurses Association in Groton, the Tuthill Nursery in Groton, the Day Publishing Co. in New London and Jackson Hewitt.

Connecticut Banking Commissioner Jorge Perez last month approved the merger, which was announced in September and completed on Feb. 1.

AFNCU completed two other mergers in 2020: one in September with Connecticut Transit Federal Credit Union and the other in February with North Haven-based Connecticut Federal Credit Union.

AFNCU President and CEO Nick Moalli told The Commercial Record last year that the mergers were opportunities to help smaller credit unions gain economies of scale. AFNCU had about $48 million in total assets before its most recent merger.
