Your latest opportunity to make your home in a historic waterfront property is here.

The federal General Services Administration (GSA) is offering an iconic Bridgeport lighthouse at auction on June 21, according to an announcement from the agency, which is sometimes referred to as “the federal government’s landlord.”

The historic Penfield Light has stood on Penfield Reef in Long Island Sound, just off of Bridgeport’s Black Rock Harbor and the neighboring Fairfield Beach, since 1874. The Second Empire-style property comes with a two-story, 1,568-square-foot keeper’s quarters and is topped by a 51-foot-tall, octagonal lighthouse tower. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Amenities include a boat landing on the sheltered, north side of the lighthouse, and a roof deck, but the island does not currently have utility hookups. Buyers should also be prepared to endure the lighthouse light’s continued operation – the Coast Guard will continue to use it to warn ships and boaters about the submerged reef – and its fog horn, which puts out regular blasts when visibility is low that can be heard nearly a mile away.

The granite-built property was repointed and weatherized in 2015 and its exterior was restored to its 19th century appearance, the GSA said. Windows installed at the time are called “hurricane-resistant” in a GSA document describing the property’s condition. Exposed and lose lead-based paint was removed along with exposed asbestos-containing materials, although neither have been fully abated.

Bidding starts at noon on June 21, with a $100,000 starting bid and a $10,000 registration deposit.
