A former Bank of America employee who stole more than $100,000 from a customer experiencing cognitive decline has been sentenced to one year in prison.

Lee Blanchette, 59, of Farmington, was sentenced last week in New Haven federal court to 12 months and one day of in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a statement. Blanchette had pleaded guilty last May to stealing more than $100,000 from the customer.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Blanchette was a relationship manager at Bank of America and had the authority to activate temporary ATM cards and assign them to a customer’s account.  Between August 2014 and March 2016, Blanchette caused multiple temporary ATM cards to be activated for bank accounts of a customer who Blanchette knew was experiencing cognitive decline, the statement said.

Without the customer’s authorization, Blanchette used the temporary ATM cards to withdraw funds from the customer’s accounts, according to the statement, keeping a significant portion for her own benefit and causing a loss of $103,080.

Blanchette was also ordered to pay full restitution to Bank of America, which had covered the victim’s losses.

Blanchette, who had pleaded guilty in May to one count of bank fraud, is released on bond and is required to report to prison on April 4.
