Monthly housing permit figures released by state officials last week suggest Connecticut’s housing production is off to a strong start in 2022.

The state’s towns and cities OK’d 801 units in the first two months of the year, up from the 445 approved through February 2021. However, the state updated its data collection methodology at the start of this year, adding 10 municipalities that had previously not reported data, meaning 2021 figures and 2022 figures are not precisely comparable, although none of the newly added municipalities are in the state’s most populous areas.

The state Department of Housing and Community Development said Connecticut municipalities authorized 347 new housing units last month, a 23.6 percent decrease compared to the 454 OK’d in January.

The 801 units approved so far this year are split 444-334 between single-family and multifamily developments.

New Haven authorized the most number of units at 66, followed by New Canaan 41 and both Milford and Vernon 13.
