Six weeks after completing its acquisition of Bridgeport-based People’s United Bank, M&T Bank has named two regional presidents for the Connecticut market, both from within M&T.
The Buffalo-based M&T Bank has named Frank Micalizzi as its Bridgeport regional president and head of commercial banking for Connecticut. The bank has also named Michael Weinstock as Hartford regional president.
M&T said in a statement that it uses a local engagement model that separates geographic areas within its footprint into community regions led by regional presidents.
“Because they know their communities best, these regionally based teams work to create differentiated strategies to serve their markets, combining the capabilities of a large institution with the care and empathy of a neighborhood bank,” the statement said.
The regional team also makes decisions locally about community activities, grants and lending, M&T said. M&T is still working on integrating People’s United systems and branches and expects the conversion to be completed later in 2022, according to M&T’s website.
In their new roles, the regional presidents will ensure collaboration across all lines of business, the statement said. They will also direct community banking activities that “advance the bank’s localized focus to provide more value for customers, businesses and communities throughout the region.”
Micalizzi had been regional president for Tarrytown, New York, and Connecticut since 2015. Micalizzi began his career at M&T Bank in 2009, the statement said, and was previously a senior group manager for the Tarrytown middle market group. Before joining M&T, Micalizzi spent 30 years with JPMorgan Chase, including as a senior vice president and division manager.
Before joining M&T Bank in 1996, Weinstock worked at People’s United Bank. He began his career at M&T as a middle-market relationship manager and also had roles as group manager for middle-market and group manager for commercial real estate in Tarrytown.
Weinstock took on the role of Connecticut market president in 2014, M&T said, building out the community bank and commercial lines of business within the state. M&T acquired nine Fairfield County branches in 2015 through its merger with Hudson City Bancorp.
Other regional presidents announced this week include Grace Lee, the new Eastern Massachusetts president. Lee had led government banking for People’s United in Massachusetts since 2014. M&T did not have retail branches in Massachusetts before the merger. Lee is also now M&T’s group lead for New England government banking.
