A downtown New Haven storefront that held the world’s first Ann Taylor shop has traded hands for $2.79 million.

The one-story building at 968 Chapel St. still has the iconic copper-roofed display windows that held high-end women’s fashions until 2020, only now they contain hookahs and marijuana glassware sold by the current tenant, Anesthesia Smoke Shop. Architecture firm Pickard Chilton is the other tenant.

The 9,250-square-foot building constructed in 1966 was touted by broker Colonial Properties as an investment property. City property records say the building was last appraised at $1.63 million.

Colonial’s Michael Richetelli represented the seller, Orange-headquartered General Asset Co. LLC, while buyer Carlson Road Limited Partnership was represented by Carl Russel of Pearce Real Estate.

“We are pleased to be able to transact this landmark property. It’s prime location in the New Haven CBD, adjacent to the Town Green and in the heart of the Yale community, make it a prized asset. There was tremendous interest in this property, as the demand for cash flowing investment properties remains high,” Richetelli said in a statement.
