Local developer Cornerstone Realty has asked city officials for permission to redevelop a huge area near the city’s downtown into a wide range of uses.

The firm filed a proposed zoning amendment for 155-393 Thomaston Ave. with the city Zoning Commission that would allow mixed-use buildings, manufacturing uses, warehouses and other industrial uses.

It’s unclear if Cornerstone has specific development plans in mind, give the wide range of uses it hopes to permit. The land is currently home to the Colonial Plaza grocery-anchored shopping center, an building leased to the state Department of Social Services and a handful of light industrial users.

One of Cornerstone’s affiliates bought the plaza for $4.8 million last fall.

The Waterbury Zoning Commission approved a public hearing for March.
