A man awaiting sentencing for his role in a murder-for-hire plot was sentenced separately yesterday to 10 years in prison for committing three bank robberies in Connecticut.
Bomani Africa, 62, previously residing in Philadelphia, was sentenced in New Haven federal court to 120 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Africa and his associate, George Bratsenis, robbed a People’s United Bank branch on April 20, 2014, in downtown Darien. After entering the bank, Africa pulled out a gun, jumped over the counter and ordered a teller to open drawers, saying, “I will shoot you if you don’t give me all your money,” according to the statement. Africa took a substantial amount of cash, the statement said, and Bratsenis picked up Africa a short distance away from the scene.
In September 2014, Africa, Bratsenis and Africa’s son, Randi Feliciano, conspired to rob another bank. After Africa stole a car from a victim at gunpoint on Sept. 25, 2014, Africa and Bratsenis, wearing masks and carrying firearms, robbed a People’s United Bank in Trumbull. They took nearly $30,000, drove from the scene in the car Africa had carjacked and then set fire to the car. Feliciano, Africa and Bratsenis then went to a Norwalk restaurant where they divided the proceeds of the robbery, according to the statement.
The third robbery occurred on Dec. 13, 2014, when Africa and Feliciano, both wearing masks and brandishing firearms, robbed a First Niagara Bank branch in Stratford, taking more than $15,000.
Africa has been detained since his arrest on May 28, 2015. Bratsenis was sentenced on April 5, 2022, to 96 months of imprisonment, and Feliciano was sentenced in 2017 to 51 months of imprisonment.
Africa and Bratsenis have also each pleaded guilty to murder-for-hire charges in New Jersey for committing the contract killing on May 22, 2014. They await sentencing in that case.
