Yale University wants to replace a parking lot, a Korean restaurant and a pair of townhouses in downtown New Haven with a big, new performing arts building and theater.

The school filed plans for a new “dramatic arts building” at the corner of Crown and York streets with city officials recently.

The 188,294-square-foot, 7-story building will house the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale graduate school program, the University’s undergraduate theater, dance and performance studies program, and Yale Repertory Theater.

In addition to the classrooms, offices, production and technical shops, rehearsal and meeting spaces, the building will have a 100-seat “studio” theater and a new, 400-seat performance space for the Yale Rep.

The energy-efficient building will seek LEED Gold certification, Yale said in a filing.

The school’s filings indicate Gilbane Building Co. will oversee construction. Toronto, Canada-based KPMB Architects led design of the building.
