Marcus Fox of Waterbury was indicted on six counts of filing false tax returns.

The indictment states that Fox filed more than 900 false tax returns for clients in his community between 2009 and 2012, including items such as false childcare credits, education credits, American opportunity credits, itemized deductions, education expenses, charitable contributions, unreimbursed employee business expenses, hobby expenses and childcare costs.

The indictment further alleges, that around 2011, Fox falsified a number of returns in a manner that allowed him to secure a greater payout for himself without his clients’ knowledge by instructing the IRS to split the refund between the client and himself.

Fox apparently hid the scheme by preparing, but not filing, a second, legitimate return document.

Fox pleaded not guilty and was released on a $100,000 bond. The charges carry a maximum term of imprisonment of three years and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count.
