Look out, New Haven and Stamford, you’re in danger of being dethroned as the top-producing municipalities in Connecticut when it comes to new housing.
Census Bureau estimates reported by the state Department of Economic and Community Development show that Branford approved 194 new units in March, for a year-to-date tally of 197, compared to the 163 nearby New Haven approved through March 31 and the 409 Stamford green-lit over the same time frame.
Other top producers so far this year: Bethel, with 127 units OK’d in January and February; Fairfield, with 110 units approved in the first two months of the year; and Brookfield, with 101 units approved in March.
Statewide, Connecticut municipalities granted permission to projects totaling 542 units in March, compared to 351 the same month in 2022.
That put the state at 1,717 homes – broken down as 444 single-families, 15 two-familes, nine units in three- and four-families and 1,234 units in buildings with five or more units – permitted in the first quarter of 2023. That’s ahead of last year’s Q1 tally of 1,152 total homes, or 688 single-families, 14 two-families, seven units in three- and four-unit buildings and 429 in buildings with five or more units..
