Three-quarters of the way through 2019, Connecticut cities and towns have permitted over 10 percent more housing units than they had by the end of September 2018, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics compiled by the state Department of Economic and Community Development.

As of Sept. 30, 3,145 housing units have been permitted, including 1,467 single-family homes and 1,498 units in multifamily buildings with five or more units. By the same time last year, 2,854 units had been permitted, including 1,448 single-family homes and 1,308 units in larger multifamily buildings.

The 2019 figures represent an increase of 1.31 percent in single-family permits and 14.53 percent in larger multifamily units, with a 10.2 percent increase in the total units permitted so far.

Of the 108 municipalities out of 169 reporting results to the Census Bureau, South Windsor, Faifield and Stamford saw significant increases in the number of units permitted year to date. In South Windsor, that figure jumped from 65 in July 2018 to 144 in July 2019; in Fairfield from 59 to 138; and in Stamford from 90 to 363.

New Haven, which has typically been a bastion of new construction in the state, saw the number of year-to-date housing permits drop from 454 by Sept. 30, 2018, to 277 by Sept. 30, 2019, the same number as was permitted by the end of the second quarter. However, the city has recently seen a large number of multifamily projects proposed.
