A supermarket that’s helped anchor the decade-long transformation of Stamford’s South End neighborhood is closing.

The Fairway supermarket chain, which has filed for bankruptcy, has notified state officials that it would likely close its Stamford location as part of the bankruptcy proceedings and lay off all 109 workers. And The Stamford Advocate quotes a top city official saying the store will close Aug. 20.

The store, which also includes a large liquor and wine section, is a critical amenity for the neighborhood, which local developer Building and Land Technology rebuilt into a luxury rental and office district following the 2008 financial crisis. BLT had put the supermarket site up for sale last year.
